The annual Capgemini Ryder Cup…..
The annual Capgemini Ryder Cup celebrated its 25th anniversary last weekend and we travelled to Dublin, Ireland and on to Druid’s Glen in Co. Wicklow to do battle. The French were victors last year at Domaine de Manville in southern France so the UK&I team were hoping for a return of the cup. I have been Captain of the UK&I team for the last 7 years and this would be my final event, handing over the Captaincy to my good friend Paul Scales.
We were so lucky with the weather, the forecast rain held off, but the wind blew, making the conditions on the Heath Course really tricky. We started with a practice round on the Heath on Friday afternoon, followed by a BBQ and a few pints of guinness. The draw was done for the Saturday morning Greensomes and the afternoon 4BBB and we retired to our rooms, some via the whiskey collection in the bar!
We were on the Glen for the greensomes and I can safely say it is the most beautiful course I have ever played. UK&I took a slight lead 4-3 into the afternoon 4 balls, back on the Heath, where the French had put several €100 in the wind machine…..we were truly thrashed 6-1!
The blind Singles draw over dinner Saturday night threw up some interesting pairings and despite the UK&I team taking 7 points from the first 8 matches out on the Glen, the French retained the trophy 15-13.
There is something about golf, the friendships, the nip and tuck of matchplay, the stunning venues and fresh air….I will miss captaining the Ryder Cup team, but if invited I will most certainly enjoy playing again next year and until I can’t anymore. And my Bunker Mentality kit will accompany me into the future. Cheers!
