Why is Rory missing Wentworth?
Rory McIlroy has decided to give the PGA Championship at Wentworth a miss to save his energy for the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits.
McIlroy has had a mixed record at Wentworth and missed it last year though he did win there in 2014 and he also has a second behind Francesco Molinari three years ago.
“I think having two weeks off after the Tour Championship is going to be nice,” he said. “Like I sort of was planning to go over to Wentworth to play the BMW, but it’s just too much travel, and with what’s coming up with Ryder Cup – yeah, that’s a long week, no matter if you’re in Europe or the States, especially I haven’t missed a session yet. So say I play five sessions again, yeah, it’s a really long week.
“So the two weeks off after the Tour Championship are going to be well needed, and I’ll go in there nice and refreshed and ready to give it my all.”
McIlroy has tried all sorts in the past 18 months to try and discover his best form and, come the Ryder Cup, that will be his 35th start since golf returned.
“It’s probably too much for me. I’ve played more than I probably should have and feel like it’s just sort of all caught up with me.”
While McIlroy is assured of his Ryder Cup place there will be plenty hoping to try and make a late impression on captain Padraig Harrington as he prepares to finalise his side.
