Schauffele loses putter mid round

It is every player's nightmare when you look in the bag and one of your clubs isn't there any more, particularly your putter and you're playing on the PGA Tour.

Gold medallist Xander Schauffele had just played his approach to the 11th hole at Caves Valley in the first round of the BMW Championship in the FedEx Cup play-offs when he realised what had happened.

“Yeah, that’s my fault,” Schauffele explained. “I went to go use the restroom [after 10] and left my putter up against the Port-a-John. I thought he grabbed it, which is my fault, and then I didn’t look, which is my fault again, so I had like a triple whammy there. And then he had to run back.”

He being Schauffel's caddy, Austin Kaiser, who then had to run back to the portaloo to rescue the putter that had been so effective in Tokyo a few weeks ago. And, in true Olympic fashion, he then played up to the crowds by flinging his arms out as though he was crossing the line.

“It was nice that the crowd got him going coming in because he was huffing and puffing,” Schauffele said.

Schauffele then missed his six-foot birdie putt 'so it was really not a good hole for me'.
