Open Champ Smith Buys Fan New Phone After Errant Tee Shot

Open champion Cam Smith is going to 'cop some heat' in the coming weeks when he finally signs up with LIV Golf but, whatever your thoughts on his golfing politics, he remains one of the good guys.

The Aussie had an eventful week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship where he tied for 13th; he began the week fielding more questions on his rumoured moved to LIV, he was then issued with a two-shot penalty for playing a ball from the wrong spot after taking a drop and he later pulled out of this week's BMW Championship with a hip injury which brought a few more negative headlines.

But there was some positive news, of sorts, when it emerged that his tee shot hit a spectator on the 7th hole in the third round which damaged a fan's thumb and phone. Which wasn't a great moment for Blake Krassenstein but what followed did restore a bit of faith in humanity.

Krassenstein put on Twitter after the tournament had finished: “A quick Cam story from Saturday, he smoked my thumb and phone with his drive on 7. Walked over shook my hand, signed his glove for me, wrote down my cell # in his yardage book and ordered me a new phone. Unreal moment.”

The fan also provided photos of the signed glove and texts sent from the World No. 2 and then an image of his new, upgraded phone.

Talk will now switch back to Smith's playing whereabouts in the coming months. His fellow pro Cameron Percy suggested that he and Marc Leishman were 'gone' before elaborating to Australian Golf Digest: ‘Look, I was just conveying what was said in the locker room during the many rain delays we’ve had on tour the past few weeks.’

Smith, who is thought to be receiving $100m when he finally joins LIV, didn't deny a move, flat-batting the question.

"My goal here is to win the FedEx Cup play-offs,’ said the 28-year-old. ‘That’s all I’m here for. If there’s something I need to say regarding the PGA Tour or LIV, it will come from Cameron Smith, not Cameron Percy. I’m a man of my word and whenever you guys need to know anything it will be said by me.

"Like I said, I’m here to play the FedEx Cup play-offs. That’s been my focus the last week and a half, that’s what I’m here to do. I’m here to win the FedEx Cup play-offs."

He did reveal that he intended to play in the President’s Cup in September which would be a big boost to the biennial competition at Quail Hollow.

"That’s something that we’ve been looking forward to for the last three years. We missed a year because of Covid and that’s something that I look forward to being a part of."
