Have Rory and Sergio fallen out?
Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia have, in their different ways, been Ryder Cup powerhouses in the past decade. In two matches they've teamed up and they're very much front and centre in the press conferences and team room.
In 2017 McIlroy was an usher at the Spaniard's wedding but the recent LIV Golf breakaway appears to have thrown a huge spanner in their relationship. A few weeks ago it was widely reported that Garcia told McIlroy that they were 'finally getting paid what we deserve' to which McIlroy comically replied “Sergio. We’re golfers. We don’t deserve to be paid anything.”
There was also the petty Garcia outburst at the Wells Fargo that "I can’t wait to leave this tour” after a lost ball incident in May.
Now, in a piece by Golf Monthly, the two appear to have fallen out with one source claiming that it has 'turned personal'.
The likelihood is that the LIV players will be excluded from the Ryder Cup qualifying, something that will obviously go down badly with McIlroy as well as the ramifications of following the money, something that the Northern Irishman has been highly critical of.
Another interesting part of the article claimed that Garcia allegedly had a locker-room rant in Germany recently, criticising the DP World Tour and criticising the players for playing on it.
One current tour member said: “They all think they are untouchable and they all think the tours can’t do anything. I think they’re all about to realise they’re wrong. It is short sighted to think regulations can’t change and that there isn’t a lot of ill feeling towards them. I think they’ve miscalculated quite dramatically.”
McIlroy has been the voice of the PGA Tour (and reason) throughout all this, he couldn't help but have a dig at Greg Norman straight after his win in Canada, and his mind is very firmly fixed on wins and not dollars.
"I hope I'm still building on my legacy. I'm still young-ish. It's very important to me. Putting your names on trophies that have the legends of the game on them, it's pretty cool. Money can't buy that."
