Davis Hartwell - remember the name
For most of us a couple of birdies represents a good day, well Davis Hartwell managed an astonishing 14 of them in a junior event in Oregon. The 13-year-old was playing at the Running Y Ranch Resort in Klamath Falls, with the course measuring 5,976 yards, when he shot a 14-under 58 at his home course – his previous best from the white tees was 64.
“I was shaking and in shock, I still am,” Harwell said. “I was just kind of focused on the next hole, the next drive. I was working on my driver all day because it’s a little inaccurate right now. I was feeling confident with the putter, and I just kept making birdies.”
Hartwell’s round was a symmetrical seven birdies on each side, with five straight birdies from the 2nd before another quintet of birdies from the 8th. There would be another at the 14th before finishing with a hat-trick.
Hartwell’s opening round was a 68 and he won the 36-hole event by 16 strokes.
When Jim Furyk shot his 58 on the PGA Tour he had 10 birdies and an eagle, Annika Sorenstam holds the best on the LPGA Tour with 13 in her 59 and, while this might not have come in the professional game, this was some round for anyone let alone a 13-year-old.
