Could PGA Tour Superstars Be Set To Invest In Leeds United?

A few weeks ago the fortunes of Leeds United looked to be at a crushing low; relegation from the Premier League and a team that gave very little in the run-in under Sam Allardyce.

But now Andrea Radrizzani has sold controlling stake to the American investment group, 49ers Enterprises, for $170m and there has been a fascinating twist, particularly if you are a golf fan.

Rickie Fowler, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas are all investors and they could be part of the plan to get the Yorkshire club back in the big time.

"There's the group that's moving forward so potentially we'll be a part of it," Fowler told Sky Sports News. "It's cool to have these opportunities. It would be fun if we get to be a part of it, if not we'll continue to root for Leeds.

"Obviously they got relegated but to get to go to a Premier League game, a Champions League game, any of that [would be great]. It's a massive sport and I feel like it is continuing to get bigger in the States. Since I haven't been to a game, I don't have the true appreciation until [I get to] be there and feel that energy."

Colin Montgomerie is a well-known Leeds fan, as is Matt Fitzpatrick's caddy Billy Foster who has enjoyed a few Leeds jokes with Spieth in the past.

In recent years American actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought Wrexham and helped get the Welsh club capture the National League last season which earned them promotion back to League Two for the first time since 2007-08.

Fowler, no doubt egged on by the prospect of being part of the Elland Road family, made Major history when he shot a first-round 62 at this week's US Open, a score that was equalled by Xander Schauffele shortly after.
