Caddy Williams To Come Out Of Retirement
The most successful caddy in the modern era, and one of the most divisive figures in the game, Steve Williams is coming out of retirement.
The New Zealander, who was on Tiger Woods' bag for 13 of his 15 major, is returning to Adam Scott's bag at the Australian PGA and Australian Open, and the 58-year-old will then share duties with Scott’s regular caddie, Greg Hearmon, next year.
Scott and Williams parted company at the end of 2017 before the Kiwi spent a short time with Jason Day in 2019 and Williams hasn't been seen since. But now he's back on Scott's bag and he has grand plans for the player currently ranked 34th in the world.
“The time I spent caddying for Adam was very memorable; helping him becoming the first Australian to win at Augusta,” Williams told Golf Digest. “I feel Adam is in a good shape with his game and I’m fresh having not caddied for a few years, so I’ll bring a lot of enthusiasm.
"I’ve always said to Adam and to others, to be remembered as one of the great players, you have to win multiple majors. The opportunity to try and get Adam major No. 2 and elevate himself to a special group of players in history, would be a privilege.”
Williams of course was on Scott's bag for his win at Augusta in 2013 when he edged out Angel Cabrera in a play-off at Augusta, as well as also helping the Aussie to reach the World No. 1 spot, and Scott was also making all the right noises ahead of the revamped partnership.
“For me it’s exciting to work again with Steve and see if we can rediscover the magic. As a player, you experience different points in your career. Right now on the PGA Tour is a time of change, and I’m adjusting to it. Having Steve and Greg doing a job share is going to help me get everything I need and that’s to be fresh at the biggest events.”
