Bubba Set To Join The LIV

The next big name on the LIV Golf conveyor belt will be two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson. The American fits the ideal LIV mould - he's 43, a bit of a divisive figure and his body is regularly letting him down and, as first reported in The Telegraph, he will make his debut in Boston at the start of September.

The report suggested that Watson has been offered around $50m to help get him over the line with the added incentive of becoming one of the 12 team captains.

Watson's inclusion seemed unlikely when he posted on his Twitter on April 13 his upcoming schedule, which clashed with the LIV events, but, as time moves on, more and more players are now crossing over. Watson has also been injured for much of the summer and the likelihood is that he's been waiting for that to clear.

“Bubba Watson is a tremendous addition to LIV Golf – another major champion joining the growing list of stars on our teams. His game combines the power, innovation, and excitement that the LIV Golf brand represents,” said Greg Norman. “He’s a risk-taker who has cemented his name among the world’s very best and we’re eager for him to come aboard to bring new energy and audiences to this league.”

In other LIV-related news Charles Howell III claimed that his recent move had nothing to do with the money which, in all this palaver, made for an interesting first aside from 'growing the game'.

“Money didn’t play a role,” he said. “Money was not a factor. For me, I’ve been [on the PGA Tour] for 22 years, and it’s been awesome. I’ve got nothing but great things to say about the PGA Tour, what they’ve given me, the opportunities, et cetera. But when this came along, I’m 43 years old, I’ve done a lot of that. I still love the game. I love the game more today than I did five years ago.

“Now that my son is playing competitive golf, I’m even more incentivised in the game. This is something really new and exciting. As these guys have alluded to, I even got a bit more excited when someone, let’s say Bryson reaches out and says, I’d love for you to be a part of my team. That’s a compliment, but it’s also a responsibility.

"Okay, I’ve got to play well; I’m responsible not only for myself but for Paul, for Bryson, for others. It’s new and exciting. Not that the PGA Tour got boring, but I’m extremely excited to be here for the next few years, and yeah, it’s a new venture, and at this age and this part of my life, it’s perfect.”

The idea of Howell being responsible for Casey and DeChambeau in a team event that only 48 golfers really care about is hilarious.
