2021 Open Heroes: Bryson DeChambeau

This is a strange one given what went on after his opening round when even his own backroom team called him out. But his words to reporters after battling his socks off to make the cut on the number, after two late birdies, at least showed some self-awareness.

“I’m 27, I’m human, I make mistakes. Thursday was another one of those. I continue to keep making mistakes unfortunately.”

His apology on social media didn’t come across as overly sincere, these do. He needs a break, he’s not made for some sort of pantomime back and forth with Brooks Koepka and he can’t help himself when talking about his length (when his driver is on song). We all feed this knowing there’s going to be some decent headlines at the end of it and, one day soon, he’s going to be better advised on how to come across and what to give away.

Imagine if he was like Dustin Johnson, who gives absolutely nothing away, in the full knowledge that his press conferences will be kept to a minimum? He will make mistakes but fair play to playing along with the boos on the 1st tee and grinding away when he could easily have missed the cut.
