Tiger: Are we going to see him play in 2022?
One of the big questions of hopefully the early part of the golfing year is when we might see Tiger Woods again with his clubs?
In December there was the incredible comeback at the PNC Championship which seemingly came from nowhere and then saw Woods and his son Charlie very nearly win the event. And all this just 10 months after his car crash which, he has since admitted, he was lucky not to lose a leg.
Afterwards he admitted to being exhausted by the two-round tournament and this was a couple of days spent playing from a buggy and in relatively easy-going surrounds. And so the guessing games began again with Augusta National, where Woods has won five times, being on plenty of people's lists while the final major of 2022 is equally as tempting – Woods has three Claret Jugs with two of them coming at St Andrews.
"I would love to play at St Andrews," he said. "It's my favourite golf course in the world. To be a two-time Open champion there, just being a part of the champions dinner is really neat," explained Woods at the end of November.
The Old Course, as well as the history and brilliance of the place, is as flat as a pancake which would suit Woods while Augusta is one of the toughest walks of the golfing year.
Leading coach and Sky Sports analyst Simon Holmes had another take on it, with the Old Course being the favourite but that it might be his final appearance anywhere.
“I really hope it doesn’t happen, but it’s something I think that could happen," said Holmes. “Jack and Arnie did the same thing on the Swilken Bridge when they played in their last major and I could just see Tiger thinking it would be a nice way to go out.”
His fellow analyst Rob Lee was more hopeful, adding that he could see Tiger actually win again this year.
If we were looking a bit closer to Woods' inner circle then we get another take. His good friend John Cook thinks we might have to wait until the end of the year for some more trademark Tiger twirls.
“I don’t see it in the next 12 months,” Cook said. “I think next time we see him will be at the PNC Championship. I don’t think his body will be physically ready. He can’t train the way he’s going to want to train.”
