Tiger Woods To Design 8,000-Yard Golf Course
One of the next phases of Tiger Woods' career will undoubtedly be more course design work. The 15-time major winner has his own website to promote TGR Design which promises that 'courses are crafted in a thoughtful and deliberate manner to create fun, yet challenging tests of golf'.
Now Woods has announced that he is designing a new course in Utah and it promises to catch plenty of headlines for all manner of reasons.
The Park City course, dubbed the Marcella Club, will offer views of the Uinta Mountains and Jordanelle Reservoir but the big takeaway is that one hole will measure over 700 yards. Off the back tees the course will measure over 8,000 yards with the opening hole coming as a 660-yard par 5.
There will be five par 5s, all over 600 yards, but it is the start of the back nine and the 702-yard 10th that will put the wind up most players. The course does though promise generous landing areas and at 7,000 feet above sea level it won't play anywhere near its length.
There will also be two par 3s of 275 yards or more and a par 3 that won't exceed 150 yards.
Interestingly Woods predicted that courses of this length wouldn't be far away when he said this in 2017.
"We need to do something about the golf ball. I just think [the ball] is going too far. With the game progressing as it is, I think the 8,000-yard golf course is not too far away. That’s pretty scary — we don’t have enough property to start designing these types of golf courses, and it just makes it so much more complicated."
This will be Woods' 11th course on his CV, it also included PopStroke which features a sensational putting layout, and work at the Marcella Club, his fourth 18-hole original design and his first routed through the mountains, will begin in the summer of 2024. There will also be the development of a second course at a later date though that won't be a Woods course.
His first design was Bluejack National which opened in 2015 and that now ranks just outside Golf Digest's Top 100 courses in the States.
“Utah is an incredible place, with favourable year-round weather that offers opportunities to be active outdoors throughout all four seasons—golfing, skiing, biking, hiking, and fishing—the list goes on and on," said Woods. "I’m thrilled to be designing a course in such a special location; this new course is uniquely beautiful and will offer engaging play for every ability.”
