The Wyles Annual Tournament – 2015

It’s an annual tournament, as the trophy states, and it’s in its fourth year. The trophy means a lot to me, considering my Dad and I set it up back in 2012 for “Wyles” – Phil Hinks. He was about to get married at the time, but it’s now become a really coveted prize amongst a group of around 10. The acronym of The Wyles Annual Tournament means that the winner will be one for the next 12 months!

I am lucky enough to have my name on the tankard, and the winners list reads:

2012 – M. Howarth
2013 – A. Duckworth
2014 – P. Hinks

This year, with my new handicap of 8.5 (yes – my goal of a single-figure handicap has been reached) I felt that my chances were quite good – especially with a Stableford format. With nine players booked in for the round at Boysnope Park Golf Club, the scene was set as we all arrived for a full English at 9am on Sunday the 2nd of August.

This year, the players competing were (handicaps in brackets): Paul Gallamore (19), Shaun Briscoe (14), Nick Tierney (20), John Hinks (28), Mark Hinks (21), Phil Hinks (19), Michael Howarth (9), Paul Faid (10) and Adam Little (28).

We’d agreed that we would all throw £6 each in to the pot, so there was £27 up for grabs for the Nearest Pin comp, and £27 up for grabs for the Longest Drive comp. Both of these were won my Mr. Little. A tidy £54 went his way.

With nine holes down, I was sitting pretty on 18 points, however in my threeball was Mr. Paul Faid who had 21.

I finished with a great birdie on the Par 5 18th, and hit 33 points in total. I wasn’t too disappointed as it was my first round playing with my new handicap. Mr. Faid ended on 36, and our threeball was completed with Adam scoring 34. I knew I hadn’t won, but the weather had been kind, and it was a great day.

The winner this year, with a very dubious score of 39 points off a 28 handicap – having never played the course before – was John Hinks.

One of the great things about the day was to see my Bunker style rubbing off on the other competitors. The pictures below show the nine of us before tee off, and four proud Bunker Mentality clothing wearers.

I’ll be back next year!!
