No Golf For Bale At Qatar World Cup

On the week that Wales and England named their squads for the World Cup there was bad news for Gareth Bale – in the sense that he won't be getting any golf in out in Qatar.

Bale is a renowned golf nut; he was nicknamed 'The Golfer' by the Spanish media while playing in Madrid, he plays off around 3 and Tottenham built a short-game area at their training ground for him. And there was that one time when he was spotted playing golf while a Madrid match that he was injured for was going on.

If that wasn't enough he has three holes in his back garden which include replicas of the Postage Stamp 8th at Troon and the 17th at Sawgrass.

He built three holes in his backyard, including replicas of the 17th at TPC Sawgrass and the “Postage Stamp” 8th at Royal Troon.

But the prospect of some golf during the 29-day tournament – Wales are in a group with England, Iran and the United States – is an unlikely one.

“There’s no golf. We’re out there to do a job,” Wales manager Rob Page explained. “In the past, I may get Gareth, Kieffer Moore or Aaron Ramsey come up to me and say, ‘What’s the plan for tomorrow afternoon? Are there meetings?’

“I’d say, ‘No, there’s no meetings, so if you want nine holes then go and play. … But that is when you have a week building up to a double header. Out there, we won’t have enough time. Every four days there is a game. It’s relentless.”

Bale, who has supported the Cazoo Open, the national open of Wales, for the past two seasons and is an investor in Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TMRW Sports, has previously spoken out about his conflict of interests though he is unlikely to have any complaints over Page's stance.

“A lot of people have problems with me playing golf,” he told Erik Anders Lang in an interview. “I don’t know what their reason is, because I’ve spoken to doctors and everybody’s fine with it. The media has this perception that it’s not good for me. Steph Curry plays maybe on the morning of a game. If I play two days before a game, it’s like ‘What’s he doing?'”
