Couples In Further Blast At LIV Stars
Fred Couples has been particularly vocal in his dislike of LIV Golf and this week he revealed that Will Zalatoris turned down $130m to join the breakaway circuit.
The 26-year-old has only won once on the PGA Tour but is one of the hottest properties in the game with six top 10s in the last nine majors and Couples paid tribute to his stablemate, they share the same agent, at a PGA Tour Champions event.
Zalatoris was reportedly offered an initial £35m before things were raised significantly by nearly an additional $100m
“I don’t know anything about the LIV Tour, except they overpay all of them,” the Orange County Register reported that Couples said. “Money is zero object. I give Will a lot of credit; he wants to stay with the PGA Tour.”
Couples then turned his attentions to Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia. The former Masters winner branded Mickelson a 'nutbag' before criticising 'all these other clowns, like Sergio' who complained about the PGA Tour before leaving it.
Which should make the Champions Dinner at Augusta an interesting evening given all three are winners there.
“I don’t have a problem with LIV. What my problem has been when I tweet every now and then, is what these guys say when they go to the LIV Tour. Just go to the LIV Tour, but stop blasting something I’ve been a part of for 42 years. That’s my problem. They’re all bashing the PGA Tour, and that affects me a little bit.
“If you’re giving Phil Mickelson $200 million at age 52 to shoot 74 and 75, God bless you.”
As for the new viewing experience the 63-year-old was equally as mocking.
“It was on the CW a couple weeks ago, or whatever that channel everybody is laughing about. I turned it on three times. It was so bad, I couldn’t even watch anyone that I liked. They don’t show ’em. Who won the last one? I don’t even know. I’m being flippy now; I don’t really care if it survives."
